DO YOU KEEP STRETCHING TO BECOME MORE STRETCHY?
One of my mentors pointed out to me that people who are drowning can’t help others…how could they?!
PASSIVE VERSUS ACTIVE STRETCHING
The photo at left represents how far I can extend my hand back at the wrist (this would be called an active stretch as I’m using my own muscles to pull the hand back).
Normal values are around 60-80 degrees and as you can see I fall woefully short of this at around 46 degrees. 😭
I suspect my wrists have learnt to specialise inflexion and remain locked down in this shortened range due to rope climbing in the marines (one of the tests is a 30ft rope climb with 21lbs of kit and a 12lbs rifle).
When I kick into a handstand, my wrist has moved well beyond where I can actively control it (this is referred to as a passive stretch as I’m using mechanical load to push me into a deeper stretch).
👾 Despite 100’s of hours of yoga my range has not improved. 🤔
👾 …is this problematic?
Maybe for some. I’d certainly say there is little margin for error operating in our passive ranges.
👾 How many of you would be interested in strengthening your wrists?
Would you like my current wrist routine? If there’s enough interest I’ll go live!
